How I Make Clothes For My Business! (First Time Selling)

I can't believe we finally made it to this point. I have been waiting 7 years to get myself to dedicate my time to this business. I have always wanted to create & design clothes for as long as I can remember & now this dream is becoming a reality!! I am mostly self taught, I went to a technical college and completed a 2 year fashion program but other than that everything I know I have taught myself.

Following this pattern is just a small start to teaching myself again how to make clothes and how to pattern draft. I'm reminding myself what kinds of things to mark (i.e. darts, notches). How to cut certain shapes for certain body types and designs. How the stretch and direction of fabric is important when cutting, the list goes on.

So here it is ....

There is a lot that goes into making clothes that you might not think about when in a store shopping. One of the first things I have had to do is figure out what my brand is. What kids of clothes am I wanting to sell? Who is my target audience? What are they looking for? It's not just what I want to wear and what I would buy but what YOU would buy from me.

Once establishing what my brand will look like, I have to choose clothes and patterns that suit my audience. This is actually the most fun part, the designs process. I can either create my own designs and patterns or choose from a VAST selection of patterns from designer brands and small brands.

Once I pick out a design and patterns to work from, I create and sew the design. This step some may use a manufacturer to create multiples of their designs or of course make them yourself if you know how. This step is VERY IMPORTANT. If a business decides to choose a manufacturer there is a lot of research that goes into that. Making sure they are ethical practices, where are they based, how do they do business, wholesale prices, and all the details that come with. Right now I am making my clothes so I have to play the role of the manufacturer, the designer, the business marketing team and the list goes on.

Once I have a garment to sell I have to add a tag with my name or logo, and add the care instructions for the materials used.

Now that we have a garment! Next is the part that takes the most time. MARKETING. After completing the garment there are photoshoots with models, photoshoots with just the garment, and detail shots. Right now video shoots are very popular, to go the extra step I could also do video shoots & video modeling, or film the process of creating the looks.

Once the photoshoots are complete the NEXT steps is to create marketing materials for advertising. Editing photos, creating magazine worthy edits, cutting and editing videos, playing around with different marketing styles to see what resonates with your audience and so much more. Once all these marketing strategies and designs area complete then we post, share, share again, post again, post a YouTube video, create a blog and advertise like there is no tomorrow.

The most important thing of all though is not making products or growing a huge brand. Its the interaction that comes with creating these clothes and making content like I do. Its reconnecting with the world to provide a new perspective on this topic. Its educating our world on slow fashion and the importance of a brand engagement and loyalty to the earth and the people living on this planet by using ethical and sustainable practices. Our business is ethical because I make the clothes that I sell, our business is sustainable because we source our fabrics second hand. We do our best to repurpose fabric and create something now that you will love. We also use biodegradable shipping materials when fulfilling orders.

I hope you guys are liking this content that I have been bringing to you recently. I am very excited to continue this journey. Continue to grow and learn more about this world of fashion design and business. I have such a passion for business and design and for a minute I honestly thought I lost my passion, but the more I dive into this the more I fall in love with this craft.
