I try to keep my blogs short since my style of blogging is a lot older than most these days. I choose to actually write out my blogs because I do love to write but most blogs these days are pictures/videos & links to products or simple instructions. I know that is the way these are going now but I still love to share my thoughts and ideas with every project, so for now you get more of what's in my head with words than with eye catching videos and pictures.
I know my style will soon conform to the way the world is entertaining, or even evolve into a new style of blogging...whatever that might be in the future but I hope you guys enjoy these short reads!
Today I am walking through the process I had when designing my first purse! ENJOY :)

As you may know, if yo follow me on youtube or instagram (nicolee.designs), I recently followed Cool Stitches tutorial on how to make a scrunchie tote. I loved it so much I wanted to explore more options for similar designs! So I saw many different variations of purses and bags with this scrunchie handles.
This bag I designed is definitely nothing I invented but I wanted to see if I could create my own pattern for this bag I loved. So I drew up a sketch of a bag design I thought I might be able to pull off with the materials I had.
This is my design...
I knew I had to make something rather small because of my limitations on the fabrics I already had. I also knew I wanted something that people have been loving & everyone who is active on my Instagram had expressed how much they loved the scrunchie bag ideas. So here we are making a checkered pattern purse with a zipper closure, and single scrunchie handle.

STEP 0: MAKING THE PATTERN
The first thing we need to do when we create anything (to my knowledge lol) is create a pattern and mock up the design. We measure out how big we want the base of the bag to be, what shape is should be, will it have pockets?, how big should the pockets be? and what shape? We also need to see how much scrunch do we want the handle to have, how long do we want the handle to be... so many measurements and thoughts we need to complete before we even start cutting.
Once we have a solid design we are ready to draft our first pattern. Measuring out and shaping all the pieces as they would be sewn together. Making sure we have seem allowance so our design is accurate as we are working. When we use and cut our pattern for the first time we use a practice fabric (you can use scraps, or muslin). Once the design is finalized and everything works according to plan (or until you adjust so much that you make is according to the original plan) then you are ready for your original fabric idea.
This is the point where I get my camera out and start to film the process of creating this new bag design. These are the steps I took to create this beautiful purse...

STEP 1: CREATING THE FABRIC - SEWING THE FABRIC PATTERN
For this designs I wanted to use the fabric I had to create a beautiful checkered pattern. I had just enough fabric to pull this off! Which makes me so happy that I actually got to use a small sheet of fabric that would have otherwise collected dust! This process was so fun because I just got to sit and cut out small squares and sew them all together until it created a checkered pattern I loved. The patterns isn't perfect but I love the organic, handmade feel it brings to the piece.
STEP 2: CUTTING OUT THE PATTERN
In this step as I explained above, I created a pattern I loved and cut it out using the fabric I just created. This part probably takes just as long as sewing because cutting out the pattern precisely to make sure it turns out as perfect as possible is very important when making these types of designs.
STEP 3: SEWING!
Of course in order to truly make this bag come to life we need to sew! Following what I learned from making this bag the first time, the steps are rather simple and this bag was very easy to put together! I started with the base of the bag, adding a padded interior so it would hold its shape. Then moving to the lining, and the straps. Once I have all the pieces individually created I put them all together by sewing the lining together with the straps on the inside and attaching the zipper last.
